Species Description - Tufted slender annual 5–30 cm; lvs near the base, with dilated sheath and narrow (1–2 mm) blade often equaling the stem; bracts spreading, unequal, the longest to 12 cm; spikelets 3–7 mm; scales numerous, green, becoming brown in age, dark-spotted, narrowly obovate, 1.5–2 mm, acute; achene oblong, 1 mm. Damp or wet, chiefly sandy soil; se. Va. to Fla. and Tex.; also from Cass Co., Ill.
