 Species Description - Differing from B. capillare, as follows: Plants often with nearly smooth, filamentous, axillary propagula; leaves hardly twisted when dry; costa subpercurrent or short-excurrent (never long-excurrent); border consisting of 1-2 rows of not much longer, narrower, or thicker-walled cells; capsules generally less than 2-3 mm long.

This species is said to be restricted to the Caribbean and the eastern United States (Syed, 1973), but on detailed examination of specimens I would extend the range considerably, as stated above. (Bryum standleyi Bartr. was mistakenly considered the same as Brachymenium standleyi in the Index Muscorum.)
