Genus Description - Usually epiphytic herbs. Stems typically short, sometimes elongate, the internodes usually short and hidden by petiole bases. Leaves: petiole often sheathing throughout much of length and geniculate at apex; blade mostly oblong to elliptic, moderately coriaceous; midrib narrowly sunken and often marginally discolored above, usually thicker than broad below, the primary lateral veins mostly obscure, scarcely more conspicuous than minor veins. Inflorescences 1, usually curved at apex, spathe and spadix cernuous at anthesis, the peduncle elongate, often subtended and ensheathed by a reduced leaf; spathe ellipsoid to globose at anthesis but barely opening, conspicuously convolute, white to cream or yellowish, caducous or marcescent; spadix usually much shorter than spathe, subcylindroid, usually cream, becoming green to bluish green. Flowers bisexual, naked; stamens 4, filaments flattened, anthers dehiscent by longitudinal slits; pistils truncate, ovary 2-locular; stigma usually oblong, borne on flat stylar apex of pistil; ovules 4-30 in two series near base of locule. Berries 3-many-seeded. Seeds oblong, minute, smooth, with endosperm.
