Genus Description - Minute to robust, generally erect plants. Stems usually branched by subfloral innovation. Leaves ovate to oblong-lanceolate (or rarely rounded); cells tending to be rhomboid-hexagonal or hexagonal. Sporophytes terminal; capsules pyriform to clavate-pyriform; peristome double and well developed; endostome segments nearly as long as the exostome, ± perforate.

The genus is presented here in a sense inclusive of Anomobryum and Rhodobryum.
