Genus Description - Leaves obovate, acute to acuminate; margins entire or serrate above, sometimes bordered; costa ending well below the apex to subpercurrent; upper cells oblong-hexagonal. Autoicous (or sometimes polygamous). Setae very short to elongate; capsules immersed to long-exserted, hemispheric to urceolate, wide or flaring at the mouth when dry; operculum flat and apiculate or shortly to moderately rostrate; exothecial cells thin- or thick-walled, sometimes ± collenchymatous. Spores spherical to subreniform, densely spinulose. Calyptrae mitrate, irregularly lobed and generally flaring at base.

  • Discussion

The erect, eperistomate, urnlike capsules and mitrate calyptrae help define the genus.
