Species Description - Plants red-brown above, dark-brown below. Stems branched by innovation, fragile, up to 15 mm high. Leaves larger and more crowded above, when dry erect and often incurved but not twisted or contorted, spreading to 30 or 45° above a short, sheathing base when moist, broadly concave, oval to short-triangular, broadly rounded to narrowly obtuse and often cucullate or channeled at the apex, not apiculate; margins recurved nearly to the apex (or occasionally weakly recurved or plane), entire; costa broad and flat, percurrent or ending 1-4 cells below the apex, with ventral stereids none or poorly represented; upper cells subquadrate, 9-11 µm wide, occasionally longitudinally elongate (2:1) at or near the margins, especially at rounded leaf tips; basal cells differentiated in the median regions or across the lower half, hyaline, smooth, 12-14 µm wide, quadrate to short-rectangular, about 1-2:1, occasionally wider than long, with walls thin or evenly thickened. Dioicous. Setae (3.5-)5-6 mm long; capsules 1-1.2 mm long, ellipsoidal; annulus deciduous in fragments, consisting of 1-2 rows of vesiculose cells; operculum 0.2-0.4(-0.6) mm long, short-rostrate to short-conic, with cells in straight rows; peristome teeth none or rudimentary, up to 100 µm long, white or pale-yellow, erect, with a low basal membrane. Spores 12-16 µm, lightly papillose.

Distribution
On soil and rock at 3080 m alt.; Veracruz (between Perote and Cofre de Perote, Sharp etal. 7169fb, 7177a, TENN).—Mexico; Peru and Bolivia.
