Species Description - Perennial herb lacking stolons; flowering culms 2-5(-9) dm tall, erect, unbranched. Leaf sheaths glabrous; ligule 0.5-1 mm long; blades linear, flat, 5-40 x 0.4-1.5 cm, smooth, glabrous on the upper surface. Inflorescence ovate; main axis 2-4 cm long; primary branches 1.5-6 cm long; with more than 2 racemes, not conjugate. Spikelets paired, elliptic, 1.5-2.2 x 0.7-0.9 mm; upper glumes 1.5-2.2 mm long, 3-5-nerved; lemma of lower floret elliptic, 3-5-nerved, muticous, the palea absent; lemma of upper floret elliptic, cartilaginous, smooth, yellow, 1.4-2.1 mm long, muticous.

Distribution
Uncommon herb of moist open areas. Bordeaux (W62). Also on St. Thomas; southern Florida, Mesoamerica to northern South America and the West Indies.
