    Species Description - Perennial herb lacking stolons; flowering culms 3-8 dm tall, erect from the base, unbranched. Leaf sheaths glabrous; ligule 0.4-1 mm long; blades linear, flat, 20-30 x 0.4-0.7 cm, smooth, glabrous on the upper surface. Inflorescence ovate; main axis 2-5 cm long; primary branches 4-8 cm long, with more than 2 racemes, not conjugate. Spikelets paired, closely imbricate, elliptic, 1.6-1.8 x 0.9-1.1 mm; upper glumes 1.6-1.8 mm long, 3-5-nerved; lemma of lower floret elliptic, 3-5-nerved, muticous, the palea absent; lemma of upper floret elliptic, cartilaginous, smooth, yellow, 1.5-1.7 mm long, muticous.

    A common weed of disturbed open areas. Reef Bay Trail (A2933), Rosenberg (B292), trail to Sieben (A2642). Also on Anegada, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda; throughout the West Indies and southern United States to Central America.
