Genus Description - Perennial herbs; culms commonly lignified, climbing, clambering, decumbent or erect, branched. Leaf sheaths smooth; ligule membranous; blades linear to ovate, flattened. Main axis of inflorescence with spreading or divaricate primary branches; secondary branches spreading; rachis terminating in a spikelet. Spikelets adaxial, terete to globose; lower glume encircling the spikelet base; disarticulating at base, seldom above the lower glume; callus not differentiated; upper glume about as long as the spikelet; lemma of lower sterile floret chartaceous; lemma of upper floret as long as the lower floret, indurate, smooth, dull, with involute margins, differentiated at the apex, muticous or apiculate. Caryopsis with whitish or grayish embryo.
