Species Description - Perennial herb, lacking stolons; flowering culms 3-15 dm tall, erect or decumbent at the base, unbranched or sparingly bran Leaf sheaths glabrous (rarely puberulent); ligule 0.4-1 mm long; blades linear, flat, 10-50 x 0.4-1 cm, smooth, glabrous or hairy on the upper surface. Inflorescence linear; main axis 9-22 cm long; primary branches 1-6 cm long. Spikelets paired, becoming solitary toward the apex, lanceolate, 4.5-5.7 x 0.9-1.4 mm; upper glume 4.3-5.5 mm long, 5-7-nerved; lemma of lower floret lanceolate, 5-7-nerved, muticous to mucronate, the palea absent; lemma of upper floret elliptic, indurate, rugose, yellow, 2-3.5 mm long (excluding the awn), awned.
Distribution and Ecology - Occasional herb of wet to dry, open areas. Bordeaux (W66), Lameshur (W523-c). Also on St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Tortola; southern United States to South America and Greater Antilles
