Species Description - Plants green above, tan below, up to 5 mm high. Leaves tubulose and incurved when dry, spreading to 45° when moist, broadly and deeply concave, (1-)2-3.5(-4) mm long, lanceolate, obtuse or occasionally acute and usually cucullate at the apex; margins erect or weakly incurved, often little or not papillose below in 1 row of cells; costa short-excurrent as a mucro or occasionally ending at or slightly below the apex; upper cells subquadrate to rounded-hexagonal, 6-10 µm wide, thin- to evenly thick-walled, with papillae bifid to multifid, 2-3 and scattered over the lumen (though crowded), or fused into a single low, compound papilla; basal cells differentiated across the leaf, rectangular, 7-9 µm wide, 3-6:1, thick-walled. Dioicous. Setae 10-13 mm long; capsules 1.5-2.2 mm long, cylindric to long-ellipsoid; annulus of 2-3 rows of vesiculose cells; operculum 1-1.2 mm long, high-conic; peristome teeth straight, lanceolate to linear, 150-400 µm long, yellow to brown, papillose to spiculose, with basal membrane none or very low. Spores 10-14 µm, weakly papillose.

This species differs from Weissia jamaicensis in having erect rather than involute leaf margins and the ventral stereid band smaller than the dorsal. The leaf apex is cucullate or, especially in small plants, merely channeled. The isotype of T. lamprothecium is gametophytically like T. crispulum, but the single capsule is inclined and dark-red. Since inclined capsules occur as occasional aberrant conditions elsewhere in the family, T. lamprothecium is included here as an abnormal expression.

Small plants of Tortella tortuosa with poor development of the V-shaped margin of hyahne cells look much like Trichostomum crispulum but are pale yellow or negative in 2 % KOH solution (as opposed to the deep yellow to yelloworange of T. crispulum).
