    Species Description - Annual herb, lacking stolons; flowering culms 3-11 dm tall, erect from the base or decumbent; sparingly branched. Leaf sheaths glabrous; ligule 0.6 -1.1mm long; blades linear, flat to conduplicate, 10-40 x 0.5 -1.3cm, smooth, glabrous. Inflorescence linear; main axis 2-6 cm long; primary branches 4-6 mm long; involucre of interlocking spines in 1 whorl, usually < 4mm wide, denselt crowded on the main axis. Spikelets solitary, lanceolate to elliptic, 4.5 -5.2 x 1.3 - 1.8 mm; lower glume 3.7 - 4.7 mm long, 3 nerved; upper glume 3-4 mm long, 3- nerved; in lower floret, lemma lanceolate, 3-5 nerved, muticuous or mucronate, palea fully developed; in upper floret, lemma lanceolate, membranous, muricate, white, 3-5 mm long, muticous.

    An occasional roadside weed. Chocolate Hole (A4068), Herman Farm (A822). Also on St. Croix and St. Thomas; southern United States to Brazil, the West Indies, and introduced into Australia.
