Species Description - Tufted perennial, 10-30 cm tall; rhizomes short; roots filiform; culms obtusely angled, 0.2-0.3 mm wide, 4 - 5-ribbed, wiry, reddish or chestnut-colored, glabrous, scabrous on ribs near apex. Leaves several; blades wiry, 2 - 15 cm long, 0.2-0.3 mm wide, somewhat inrolled, prominently 3-5-veined on upper surface, reddish or chestnut-colored, glabrous, scabrous on margins toward apex, the apex acuminate; sheaths glabrous, prominently 3-veined on backs, long-fimbriate at apex. Inflorescence a single brown to chestnut-colored spikelet at summit of culm; involucral bracts 3, the lowest with sheathing base and apical fimbriae, elongate, overtopping the spikelet, the upper 2 typically scale-like, shorter than the spikelet; spikelet ovate-lanceolate, 6-10 x 1.5-2.5 mm; scales narrowly ovate, 3-3.5 x 1-2 mm , glabrous, light brown to chestnut-colored, curvate-keeled, the keel dark reddish brown, the apex acute, short-mucronate on basal scales. Stamens 3, the anthers 1-1.5 mm long; style 3-branched, one-half to two-thirds the length of the glabrous unbranched portion. Achene obovoid, 1.5 x 1.0 mm , 3-angled, transversely rugulose, brown, the angles lighter, yellowish, style base 3-angled, 0.3 mm long.
