Genus Description - Erect herbs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite or whorled, serrate. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, axillary, solitary or paired; not bracteate; calyx of 4-5 equal, deeply lobed sepals; corolla saucer-shaped, with 4 deeply parted, spreading lobes, pubescent within; stamens 4, exserted, the filaments of equal length, adnate to the base of corolla tube, the anthers oblong to ovoid, bilocular; ovary 2- locular with axile placentation, the style distal, elongate, exserted, with a capitate stigma. Fruit a many-seeded, septicidal capsule; seeds angular, obovoid.
