Species Description - Tree 20-25 m tall; bark brown, fissured and rough; twigs stout, minutely hairy to glabrous when young, becoming grayish and lenticellate. Leaves spirally arranged; blades 12-35 x 4.5- 7.5 cm, elliptic to oblanceolate, subcoriaceous, glabrous, with a thickened midvein, prominent beneath, the apex obtuse to rounded, sometimes notched, the base obtuse to attenuate, the margins crenate; petioles glabrous, 1-3 cm long. Flowers 2-6 in axillary fascicles; pedicels 4-10 mm long, puberulent to glabrous. Calyx cup-shaped, the sepals 4, 4-8 mm long, ovate to rounded, puberulent without, the outer pair shorter than the inner ones; corolla white to pinkish, tubular, 7-13 mm long, the tube 4-8 mm long, the lobes simple, mostly 6, but also from 4 to 8, 3-5 mm long, oblong to ovate, papillate; stamens (4-)6(-8), the filaments 1-2 mm long, the anthers 1-2.5 mm long, lanceolate; staminodes (4- )6(-8), 1.5-3 mm long, lanceolate, papillate; ovary ovoid to globose, pubescent, 4-6-locular, the style subulate, with a capitate stigma. Berry 1- to many-seeded, ellipsoid, ovoid, or globose, 2.5-5 cm long, dark yellow at maturity. Seeds 2-3 cm long, globose to plano-convex.
Distribution and Ecology - An occasional tree of moist forests. Bordeaux (A2126). Also on Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, Panama to northern Venezuela and Pern.
