Genus Description - Small to large trees, glabrous to variously pubescent. Leaves coriaceous, usually large; stipules interpetiolar, entire, connate at base, persistent. Flowers bisexual, 5-6-merous, actinomorphic, in terminal or axillary cymes or less often solitary; hypanthium bell-shaped or cone-shaped, truncate at apex or 5-lobed; corolla shortly trumpet-shaped, pubescent or glabrous, the tube shorter than the oblong lobes; stamens 5-6, exserted, the filaments inserted in the throat, the anthers sessile or nearly so; ovary inferior, 2- carpellate, each carpel with numerous horizontal ovules, the style stout, exserted. Fruit a large coriaceous, firm, fleshy berry; seeds numerous, obtusely trigonous.
