Genus Description - Shrubs or small trees. Leaves coriaceous or nearly so, entire; stipules interpetiolar, connate into cup-shaped sheath, persistent. Flowers bisexual, 5-6-merous, actinomorphic, in axillary raceme, corymbs, cymes, or panicles; calyx cup-shaped; corolla funnelshaped or trumpet-shaped, the lobes oblong, elongate; stamens 5-6, the filaments inserted at base of corolla tube, the anthers exserted; ovary inferior, 5-10-celled, each locule with a single ovule, the style stout, club-shaped. Fruit a depressed-globose or globose drupe, ridged when dry, of numerous pyrenes; seeds minute, oblong, compressed.
Distribution and Ecology - A genus of about 10 species in tropical and subtropical America.
