    Genus Description - Annual or perennial herbs, often woody at base. Leaves opposite, chartaceous to rigid, short-petiolate or sessile; stipules interpetiolar, connate into sheath, with filiform appendages, persistent. Flowers bisexual, 4-merous, actinomorphic, sessile, in axillary glomerules; hypanthium small, obovoid, crowned by a small, 4-lobed calyx; corolla funnel-shaped to trumpet-shaped, the tube longer than the lobes, the lobes 4, valvate; stamens 4, exserted, the filaments inserted on throat of tube; ovary inferior, 2-carpellate, each carpel with an ascending ovule, the style filiform, bilobed. Fruit a dry schizocarp separating at maturity into 2 indehiscent or partly dehiscent mericarps; seeds oblong, convex.
