Genus Description - Perennial herbs, with very short or contracted stems, borne from a stout rootstock. Leaves in a basal rosette; blades usually decurrent into a sheathing base or petiolate. Inflorescence spicate. Calyx with equal lobes or 2 of them longer; corolla trumpet-shaped, with spreading or reflexed lobes; stamens 4 or 2, exserted. Fruit a membranous circumscissile capsule, with numerous tiny seeds.
