    Species Description - Plants robust, up to 12 cm high, yellowish-green, radiculose nearly to the apex. Leaves 10-13 x 1.5-2 mm, flexuose or falcate-secund, spreading, slightly twisted and contorted when dry, somewhat concave below, keeled above, lanceolate, slenderly long-acuminate, unistratose except for the bistratose alar region; margins strongly serrate above; costa percurrent to short-excurrent, the upper part with 2-4 serrated dorsal ridges, in section showing 1 row of guide cells and 2 stereid bands, the dorsal epidermal layer with a few differentiated cells; cells elongate and pitted throughout. Pseudautoicous. Setae 2-4 per perichaetium, or rarely solitary, 3-6 cm long, red; capsules 3-5 mm long, curved, horizontal, smooth; annulus none; operculum 3-4 mm long. Spores 16-33 µm.

    This is largest and most distinctive Dicranum in Mexico. The plants measure up to 12 cm in height, the leaves are 10-13 mm long, and the sporophytes are clustered.

    On humus and soil at moderate to high altitudes; Chiapas, Distrito Federal, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla.—Mexico to northern South America.
