    Species Description - Plants green to yellowish- or brownish-green, up to 8 mm high. Leaves 1-2 mm long, linear-lanceolate, acute to subobtuse; margins usually recurved to revolute nearly to the apex, bistratose above; upper cells subquadrate, 9-14 µm, smooth. Setae 5-10 mm long; capsules 1-2 mm long, ovoid-cylindric; annulus narrow. Spores 14—19 µm, finely papillose.

    The linear-lanceolate leaves are crisped and curled when dry, and the leaf margins are recurved to revolute nearly throughout and bistratose above. The leaf cells lack the fine longitudinal striations characteristic of D. crispula (Hedw.) Lindb. Ellipsoid to cylindric asexual reproductive bodies have been reported on the underside of the leaf bases in North American plants, but no brood bodies were seen on the Mexican plants.

    Dicranoweisia calcarea Bartr. of Guatemala, also known as Dicranella calcarea (Bartr.) Crum, has recently been synonymized with Gymnostomum jacksharpii (Crum) Allen (Allen, 1990b). The plants have slender, secund leaves with pellucid, thick-walled cells. Those of the leaf base are oblongrhomboidal and noticeably pitted or non-pitted. The upper cells are limited to 2-A rows on either side of an excurrent costa; they are narrowly oblong and somewhat pitted inward but rather shorter and often subquadrate at the margins.
