    Species Description - Moderately robust, coarse plants in loose tufts 1-5 cm high, blackish below, yeUowish at the tips; sterile plants equally fohate, fertile plants with comal tufts of leaves. Leaves straight, appressed when dry, 5-7 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, gradually narrowed to a long, slender acumen ending in a toothed, hyahne hair point; margins broadly incurved above; costa about 1/4—1/3 the leaf base, shghtiy ribbed at back, excurrent into the awn, in section showing dorsal and ventral stereid bands; alar cells conspicuously differentiated, inflated, reddish; basal cells rectangular, with thickened, pitted walls, narrower at the margins, those at extreme margins forming a border of hyaline, thin-walled, elongate cells vanishing in the lower part of the leaf; upper cells elongate, rhomboidal, thick-walled and pitted. Setae 6-8 mm long, several per comal tuft; capsules ovoid, scabrous at base. Calyptrae fringed.

    The hyaline hair point, costa with dorsal and ventral stereids, absence of dorsal lamellae, and long, pitted upper cells are distinctive.
