Genus Description - Shrubs or small trees; stems often armed with branched, axillary spines. Leaves alternate, entire to serrate, not pellucid-punctate or lineate; petioles present; stipules wanting. Flowers unisexual, pedunculate, in axillary racemes or fascicles; bracts minute, persistent; calyx of 4 or 5 shortly connate sepals; petals wanting; staminodes wanting; nectary disk glandular, external to the stamens. Staminate flowers with 8 or more stamens, the filaments free, the anthers opening by longitudinal slits; pistillodes wanting. Pistillate flowers lacking stamens, the ovary unilocular, with 2-3, few-ovulate wall placentae; the style simple or 2-branched, the stigma flattened. Fruit an indehiscent, few-seeded berry.
Distribution and Ecology - A genus of about 100 species, most of which occur in the neotropics.
