    Species Description - Tree to 15 m tall; bark moderately rough, grayish to brown. Leaves imparipinnate, 16-39 cm long; leaflets 9-15, one distal on rachis, the others opposite, 4-15 x 2-7.6 cm, oblong or elliptic, chartaceous, glabrous, the apex short- to long-acuminate, the base obtuse to rounded, the margins entire; petiolules swollen; stipels minute, filiform; stipules awl-shaped, 3 mm long, early deciduous. Panicles as long as the leaves; bracts minute, early deciduous; pedicels short. Calyx bell-shaped, 3-4 mm long, minutely toothed, ferruginous-tomentose, sometimes pinkish-tinged; colrolla pink to purple, the standard nearly circular, to 1 cm long, involute, the wings as long as the keel; ovary elliptic, glabrous to puberulent, the style incurved, the stigma punctiform. Legume 3-3.5 x 2.5 cm, ellipsoid to subglobose, glabrous, the walls green and fleshy, usually eaten by bats, 1- seeded.

    Distribution and Ecology - Common tree of moist areas, abundant in secondary forest or along roadsides, Emmaus (A3775), trail to Sieben(A2083). Also on St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Tortola; througout warm areas of the New World.
