Species Description - Erect shrub to small tree 1-2.5 m tall, glabrous, with numerous branches from a woody base; branches reddish or yellowish with conspicuous swollen nodes. Leaf blades 2-6 x 0.2-1.2 cm, linear to elliptic, nearly coriaceous, the apex acute, obtuse or seldom rounded, the base rounded and unequal, the margins entire and revolute; petioles 1-1.5 mm long; stipules triangular and ciliate. Cyathia solitary, cone-shaped, on peduncles to 7 mm long; glands green, the appendages broadly elliptic, with a white band along the margins. Pistillate flower exserted; ovary glabrous, the styles elongate, jointed for 1-2 mm at their bases. Capsule glabrous, 3-lobed, ovoid, ca. 4 mm long. Seeds ovoid, ca. 2 mm long, light brown.

Distribution
A common shrub of open sandy coasts and coastal thickets. Emmaus (A3116), Lameshur (A603). Also on Anegada, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda; Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the Lesser Antilles.
