Species Description - Plants in yellow-brown to dull-green tufts u p to about 10 mm high. Leaves erect-flexuose to subsecund when dry, erect-spreading when moist, 1-2 mm long, oblong- to narrowly lanceolate, gradually tapered to a narrow, blunt or rounded, usually crenulate or serrulate tip (especially on leaves of innovations); margins ± recurved, often strongly so; costa stout, subpercurrent, sometimes ± rough at back above; cells variable, quadrate to short-rectangular and rather thin-walled to irregularly rectangular or linear and thick-walled, 11-55 x 5-7 µm. Setae 5-15 mm long, flexuose to rigid and rather stout, usually yellow, becoming brown to reddish with age; capsules erect and symmetric, 0.7-1 mm long, ovoid to subcylindric, smooth, usually ± contracted below the mouth when dry and empty; annulus large; operculum 0.7-1 mm long; peristome teeth 200-290 µm high, divided more than 1/2 way down from the apex, pitted-striolate below. Spores 15-20 µm, finely papillose.

Distribution
On roadbanks or banks of ditches at 100-1500 m alt.; Guerrero, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz.—Mexico; throughout tropical America; southeastern United States.
