    Species Description - Plants yellow-green to green, gregarious to scattered, 2-6(-8) mm high; innovations infrequent. Stem leaves loosely erect to erect-spreading, 1.3-2 mm long, lanceolate to lancesubulate; margins erect to incurved above, entire below, serrulate above; costa percurrent; cells long-rectangular above, shorter below. Comal leaves erect-spreading to faintly secund, 2-2.7 mm long, lance-subulate, channeled above; margins serrate above the middle; costa percurrent; lamina narrow above and frequently bistratose, the cells linear to linear-flexuose above, shorter below, the basal cells loosely rectangular. Autoicous. Antheridia in lateral buds. Setae up to 0.8 mm long, erect; capsules immersed, ellipsoidal to ovoid, sharply apiculate, 0.75-0.85 x 0.4-0.5 mm, orange-brown at maturity. Spores 20-25 µm, coarsely papillose. Calyptrae cucullate.

    On soil in open areas in oak and oak-pine forests; Baja California Sur (Delgadillo et al. 3092b, Bowers et al. 5160a, 5192a, 5194b, TENN) and Durango (Bowers et al. 5148, 5288a, TENN); also Hidalgo and Mexico (Cardenas, 1987) and Zacatecas (Cardenas & Delgadillo, 1986).—Mexico; western North America from Arizona and California to British Columbia; widespread in eastern North America.
