Genus Description - Small trees with palmate, entire, or palmately compound leaves, without stipules, polygamous, dioecious or rarely monoecious. Male flowers on long, panicle-like cymes; female flowers on short, few-flowered cymes. Other characters typical of the family.

Distribution
A genus of 22 species, naturally occurring from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. One species (C. papaya) is widely cultivated throughout the tropics for its edible fruits.
