Species Description - Annual or short-lived herb to 35 cm tall, acaulescent or nearly so. Leaves basal, subsessile, 1.5-4.5 x 0.5-1.4 cm, oblanceolate to obovate, chartaceous, pubescent on both surfaces, the apex obtuse, the base attenuate, the margins subentire or with 2 or 3 rounded teeth per side; peduncular bracts much reduced. Inflorescence loose and open, monocephalous or much more commonly of few to several cymosely arranged heads; peduncles 1 to several, simple or occasionally sparingly branched in upper half, to 35 cm long, slender, bracteate, the bracts ca. 3-10, well-spaced, sessile, to 15 x 4 mm , narrowly oblanceolate, entire. Heads radiate, 60- 75-flowered, 4.5-5.5 mm tall and broad; involucre hemispheric, broadly bell-shaped, to ca. 4-4.5 mm tall, 2-3-seriate; involucral bracts narrowly lanceolate, 1.5-4.5 x 0.2-0.5 mm , weakly and loosely pubescent, eventually completely reflexed; receptacle flat to subconvex, 1.9-2.3 mm broad. Ray flowers ca. 40-50 in several series, inconspicuous and not much exserted from involucre; corollas 3-4 mm long, the tube white, the limb violet, somewhat to tightly coiled; style branches linear. Disk flowers ca. 20-25; corollas tubular, 2.5-3 mm long, pale yellow; anthers included; style branches oblong. Achenes elliptic-oblong, 1.1-1.4 mm long, pilose at base, less so above; pappus simple, of ca. 20 bristles, 2.5-3 mm long.

Uncommon weedy plant of wet shaded banks. Cruz Bay (W680), Rosenberg (B293). Also on St. Thomas and Tortola; throughout the Greater Antilles; Philippines (Guy Nesom, pers. comm.).
