Genus Description - Trees or shrubs. Leaves usually chartaceous to coriaceous. Flowers solitary or in clusters, terminal, but sometimes appearing as opposite the leaves; sepals valvate, much smaller than petals; petals fleshy; stamens numerous, with the fleshy, connective truncate, projecting beyond the anthers; carpels numerous, usually free, with a single ovule. Fruit fleshy, formed by fused carpels, with numerous seeds.

Distribution
About 100 species, from tropical America and Africa; many species cultivated throughout the tropics for their edible fruits.
