Species Description - Cespitose annual or perennial; culms erect or occasionally arching; leaves mostly basal or produced near the base; inflorescence bracts green, (2-)3-5 exceeding inflorescence; basal bract longest, 0.7-12 cm long; scales mostly white, slightly spreading, glabrous to puberulent; achenes lenticular, bilaterally symmetrical, 0.8-1.2(-1.4) mm long, 0.75-1.5 mm wide; achene surface strongly transversely rugose.

Syntypes: “Habitat in America meridionali. Richard, in insula Trinitatis [not known from Trinidad, probably collected in mainland South America], v. Rohr” (C, syntypes, not seen; MICH, microfiche of syntypes).
