    Genus Description - Perennial herbs. Leaves short-petiolate; blade with numerous minute cystoliths. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, quadrangular spikes or racemes, with large, foliaceous, overlapping bracts covering most of the flower; calyx with 5 equal or unequal, awl-shaped sepals; corolla actinomorphic, funnel-shaped, white or purplish; stamens 4, of equal length; style filiform, the stigma simple. Capsule wide ellipsoid or nearly globose; seeds rounded and flattened.
