    Species Description - Cespitose perennial, sometimes also rhizomatous; stems slender, erect, 1-3 dm; sheaths very oblique, the projecting lobe twice as long as its diameter; spikelet ovoid, 2-10 mm; scales broadly rounded above, cartilaginous, pale brown, closely appressed; bristles dark brown, longer than the achene; style trifid; achene brown, trigonous, 1 mm; tubercle depressed-pyramidal, a third as wide and a fourth as long as the achene. Brackish marshes along the coast; Md. to Mex.; Bermuda.
