    Species Description - Rhizome suberect; rhizome scales dark castaneous, lanceolate, 5-7(-10) mm long, 1-3 mm wide, lustrous, entire to denticulate; fronds 1-1.4 m long; stipe 25-70 cm long, ½-2/3 the frond length, stramineous to tan with brown, ovate-lanceolate scales at base; blade pinnate, 40-60 cm long, 2026 cm wide; pinnae 12-18 pairs, 12-24 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, serrately incised or lobed less than ¼ their width, lowermost stalked to 5 mm, all but lowermost 2-4 pairs adnate and long-decurrent onto rachis, those of upper 1/3 of blade connected by a wing; rachis with sparse bifid or trifid scales, tips clavate; costae below and above with sparse, linear-lanceolate, tan, hairlike scales, 0.3-0.8 mm long with clavate tip, adaxial costal groove with minute puberulence, especially dense near base of pinnae; veins 3-6 pairs per segment, not united or rarely the basal veins casually united; sori in a double row between costules, 25 pairs of sori per segment.

    Polypodium longicaudatum Liebmann, Mexic. bregn. 209 (seors. 57). 1849. Dryopteris longicaudata (Liebmann) Maxon, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 13: 18. 1909. Syntypes. Mexico. Veracruz: “Barranca de Huitamalco,” Liebmann [Pl. Mex. 2694, Fl. Mex. 737, 738, 739] (C!; isosyntype K). Lectotype (chosen by A. R. Smith, 1981: 213): Fl. Mex. 737. The once-pinnate blade and long-decurrent pinnae distinguish S. longicaudata from the other Oaxacan species of Stigmatopteris.
