    Species Description - Rhizome erect, to 20 mm diam.; rhizome scales bicolorous, central portion dark brown, lustrous, margin thin, erose, lighter brown, linear-lanceolate, 3-4 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide"; fronds mostly 70-120 cm long (to 2 m), clumped; stipe nearly ½ the frond length, stout, to 1.0 mm diam., green-yellow to black at base, grooved, with minute bumps at base; blade debate, 40-90 cm wide, bipinnate to quadripinnate-pinnatifid; pinnae 47 pairs, alternate, inequilateral, petiolulate; segments lanceolate-deltate to obliquely oblong, 12 cm long, sessile, distal segments adnate-de-current, base cuneate, margin serrate to lobed, slightly incurved, glossy dark green above, slightly lighter below, glabrous with minute papillae, coriaceous; veins free, nearly reaching the margin; vertical wing present on costae above; sori submarginal, terminal on veins, 0.8 mm wide, 1.0 mm long, usually impressed, protruding above; true (inner) indusium glabrous, crenulate, adnate to the blade along three sides forming a conical cup just back from the margin; spores tetrahedral with irregular ridges.

Microlepis galeottii Fée, Mém. foug. 5: 327. 1852. Type.n Mexico. Teotalcingo, Galeotti 6526 (P?, not found). Microlepis caudata Fée, Mém. foug. 5: 327. 1852. Type. Mexico. Galeotti 6527 (P!). For additional synonymy, see Proctor (FI. L. Antill. 2: 118. 1977). The dark green, coriaceous, highly dissected blade resembles that of Dennstaedtia bipinnata, but Saccoloma inaequale is distinct by its erect, scaly rhizome and submarginal sori.
