    Species Description - Rhizome scales dimorphic in width, 0.1-1.0 mm wide, 5-6 mm long, concolorous, thin, tan to gray-brown; fronds 1-5 m tall; stipe stramineous, glabrous; blade once-pinnate, not pedate, lacking exaggeration of basiscopic pinnules, chartaceous to firm; pinnae entire, 30-45 mm wide, 25-45 cm long, hairs in axils elongate and moniliform, base cuneate, margins entire, both surfaces glabrous; awns lacking; veins netted in outer one-half or only near the margin or nearly free and only casually anastomosing; indusium 1.0-1.3 mm wide, entire; sporangia mixed with 0.3 mm long paraphyses; spores tan to brown.

Lectotype (chosen by Proctor, FI. L. Antill. 2: 143. 1977). Plumier, Traité foug. Amér., t. 105. 1705. LINN 1246.1 was added after 1755, according to Jackson (1912). This large, strictly once-pinnate species is free-veined in the central portion of each pinna, but is net-veined in the outer half of the pinna toward the margin.
