    Species Description - Similar to Polypodium areolatum in all respects except: blade with linear, twisted, toothed, orange scales on the lower surface (scales white in cultivation); blade margin with low teeth consistently; rhizome scales shorter (4-6 mm) and entire except on long tip; pinnae are wider (1830 mm wide).

Mexico. “El Sabino près d’Izmiquilpan” [specimen], Galeotti 6430 (BR!). Phlebodium araneosum often has falcate pinnae, but this is not constant and may be a reflection of dry or exposed habitat. The most distinctive specimens (from Etla, Miahuatlán, Ixtlán) tend to be falcate, and most are from the center of the state or on the Pacific slope.
