    Species Description - Rhizome short, suberect; rhizome scales light brown, ovate-lanceolate, 3-5 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, margin ciliate-denticulate; fronds mostly 60-90 cm long; stipe stramineous, equaling or longer than blade, with a few, brownish, ovate scales similar to those of the rhizome and scattered, twisted, hairlike scales 1-2 mm long; ra-chis glabrous or glabrescent; blade 20-45 cm long, with l-4(-6) pairs of lateral pinnae and a conform terminal pinna, with or without a bud in axil of a distal pinna; pinnae subfalcate, 9-10 (-20) cm long, 2-3(-5) cm wide, elliptic to ovate, often inequilateral, base rounded to cuneate, margin entire to spinulose only in distal 1/3, teeth 0.1-0.3 mm long; costa and veins below with rare to sparse minute, hairlike scales, 0.5-0.8 mm long on costae, 0.1-0.3 mm long on veins; veins anastomosing about midway between costa and margin; sori in 3-4(-6) rows, first row 2-3 mm from costae; indusia peltate, small, early deciduous, 0.1-0.3 mm diam., dark brown.

Phanerophlebia juglandifolia is distinct in its few pinna pairs and regularly anastomosing veins.
