Species Description - Rhizome usually erect, the apex bearing large, pale brown, pubescent scales. Fronds few, arching; stipes 5-12(-25) cm long, finely uncinatepubescent and bearing scattered, small, pale brownish, hirtellous scales. Blades broadly lanceolate to lance-ovate, 50-100 cm long, 20-35 cm broad, abmptly narrowed toward base, the lowest pinnae being vestigial; rhachis deeply grooved on adaxial side, densely clothed in the groove with acicular hairs, otherwise finely pubescent on all sides with uncinate hairs. Pinnae linear- to oblong-acuminate, up to 15 cm long, 2-2.5(-3) cm wide near the base, the costa of each subtended at base by a small pale brown aerophore; costae, other vascular parts and tissue strigillose throughout on adaxial side with acicular hairs, beneath hirtellous with uncinate hairs chiefly on costae and veins. Segments deltateoblong to oblong, slightly falcate, (3-)5-7 mm broad at base, the margins usually narrowly reflexed; veins 7-10 pairs (most often 8-9 pairs), simple or rarely the basal ones forked. Sori round or oval; indusium small, erect, ciliate with long uncinate hairs, deciduous; sporangia glabrous.
Distribution and Ecology - General Distribution. Greater and Lesser Antilles; Costa Rica and Panama. Distribution in Puerto Rico. Widespread in mountainous areas; recorded from Adjuntas, Barranquitas, Jayuya, Maricao, Orocovis, Rio Grande, and Utuado. To be expected in many more localities. Habitat. Moist shaded slopes and banks in wet montane forests; occasionally on shaded road banks, at middle to high elevations (430-1240 m), frequent or common.
