Species Description - Rhizome horizontal, short-creeping, green, 10-12 mm diam.; rhizome scales brown; fronds to 2 m tall, 27-40 cm wide; stipe ca. ½ the frond length, brown to olive-brown, with sparse, brown, appressed scales; blade pinnate, pinnae 7-11 pairs, sterile ones 14-34 cm long, 3-4.5 cm wide, narrowly elliptic, slightly falcate, margin subentire or sometimes undulate, faintly serrulate near apex, base unequally rounded or cuneate, apex acuminate to abruptly caudate; lamina dark olive, coriaceous, with minute brown blade scales denser at midvein; veins simple or once-forked; fertile pinnae similar in shape to sterile but narrower, to 26 cm long, 2 cm wide; synangia 150-200 per pinna.

Amér., t. 108. 1705, illustrating a plant from Martinique or Haiti. Danaea elata Liebmann, Mexic. bregn. 306 (seors. 154). 1849. Type. Mexico. Veracruz: Barranca de la Hacienda de Jovo, Liebmann [Pl. Mex. 2199, Fl. Mex. 848] (C!). Danaea media Liebmann, Mexic. bregn. 306 (seors. 154). 1849. Syntypes. Mexico. Veracruz: Barranca de la Hacienda de Jovo, Liebmann [Pl. Mex. 2185, Fl. Mex. 653, 654, 849, 850] (C!). This is the largest of the Danaea species, and most easily distinguished by the lack of nodes on the stipe.

Terrestrial in wet montane forests of Atlantic slope; Ixtlán, Juchitán, Villa Alta; 100-600 m. Mexico (Oax, Chis); Guat to Pan; WI, Trin; Col to Peru, Braz.
