Species Description - Rhizome ascending; rhizome scales bicolorous, central portion black, occluded, margin clathrate, light brown, 1.5-2 mm long, 0.3-0.5 mm wide, linear-lanceolate (acicular); fronds clumped; stipe (6-) 12-15 mm long, lustrous with narrow wings (0.1-0.3 mm wide), rare hairlike scales 1-2 mm long; blade once-pinnate, linear, (6-) 15-30 cm long, 2-3.5 cm wide, pinnatifid apex non-proliferous, reduced at base; rachis lustrous, black to dark brown, wing (0.1-0.3 mm wide) green; pinnae 25-30 pairs, sessile, oblong, (6-) 10-18 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, acute, cuneate, base inequilateral, dimidiate, superior margin bidentate, sinuses 1-3 mm deep; veins forked, hydathodes prominent; sori mostly 1-2(-3) per pinna, usually parallel to lower margin; indusia 2-3 mm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide, entire.

Asplenium formosum is distinguished by the deeply incised acroscopic pinna margin and its frequent occurrence on moist rocks by streams at low elevations.
