Species Description - Rhizome short, stout, compact, erect or ascending; rhizome scales golden brown, becoming brown, 5-6 mm long, 0.8-1.5 mm wide, linear-lanceolate, apex with an ephemeral twisted hair, ciliate-denticulate, especially in distal half; fronds clumped, to 70 cm long; stipe ca. 1/3 the frond length, castaneous to atropurpureous, terete, glabrous; blade ovate, 3-4-times pinnate, 15-35 cm wide; pinnae 4-8 pairs, alternate; segments stalked (2-6 mm long), not articulate, stalk color passing into segment entire to crenate, 12-20 mm long, flabellate, pilose above and below with stiff whitish hairs (0.3 mm long); sori few to several (310) per segment, 1.5-7 mm long; indusium reniform, pubescent, with hairs 0.3 mm long; spores tan.

Adiantum tricholepis is readily identified by the presence of stiff, whitish hairs on the upper and lower blade surfaces.
