Species Description - Rhizome short-creeping, 5-10 mm diam.; rhizome scales lustrous, light brown, becoming dark brown in center portion, linear-lanceolate, ciliate-fimbriate, 2-3 mm long, 0.8-1.0 mm wide; fronds clumped, 25-110 cm long; stipe 1/3-½ the frond length, atropurpureous, lustrous, terete, glabrous with rare minute tubercles; blade ovate-deltate, 15-60 cm wide, 3-5 times pinnate near the base; pinnae 5-9 pairs, alternate, stalked, with conform terminal pinna; segments trapeziform to rhombic, or flabellate at apex, upper and lower surfaces glabrous; fertile segments 1-2 cm long and wide, stalked (2-4 mm long), articulate, stalk color stopping abruptly at bulge at segment base; sterile segments somewhat larger than the fertile ones, sterile margin deeply lobed, dentate, veins running to teeth; sori oblong, 2-3 mm long, several per segment; indusium glabrous, slight yellow wax in sorus; spores tan.

Mexico. Veracruz: Nr. Orizaba & Hua-tusco, Schaffner 40 and 41 (P?). Adiantum tenerum most closely resembles A. princeps, from which it differs by the former having smaller, bicolorous rhizome scales and occurring on the Atlantic lowlands.
