    Species Description - Rhizome horizontal, compact, 1-2 mm diam.; rhizome scales lustrous, brown, often with dark brown to black central streak, linear-lanceolate, entire, 3-4 mm long, 0.3-0.5 mm wide; fronds 20-45 cm long, clumped; stipe 1/5-2/5 the frond length, castaneous, glabrous, lustrous; blade once-pinnate, linear; pinnae 10-16 pairs, with subconform terminal pinna or extended rachis rooting at tip, alternate, largest pinnae at base of frond 20-35 mm wide, stalked (20 mm long on basal pinnae, reduced to 5 mm at frond tip), not strongly articulate but color terminating at pinna base, lunate, flabellate, upper and lower surfaces glabrous, lower margin straight to concave, outer margin incised-lobate, lobes rounded, veins ending in shallow sinuses; sori one per lobe, oblong to linear, 2-8 mm long; indusium glabrous; spores brown.

    Type. India. Malabar Coast, collector not stated (G). Adiantum philippense sensu auct., non Linnaeus, Sp. pl. 2: 1094. 1753. The radicant blade apex of this species is shared in Oaxaca only with A. deflectens, which is distinct in its sharply denticulate segment margins.

    Terrestrial, on banks near streams, low elevation on Pacific side of the state; Jamiltepec, Juchitán, Juquila, Pochutla, Putla; 50-850 m. Mexico (Sin, Nay, Col, Mich, Gro, Oax, Chis); Guat to Pan; Cuba; Col, Braz?; Old World tropics.
