    Species Description - Rhizome stout, decumbent or erect, clothed at apex with thick, lustrous dark brown, lance-attenuate scales mostly 6-15 mm long, these with distantly glandular-papillose margins. Fronds to 2 m long or more; stipes stout (up to 1.5 cm in diam.), dark brown and deciduously scaly toward base, nearly as long as the blades. Blades deltate, up to 1 m long or more, nearly as broad at base; pinnae altemate, oblique-spreading, stalked, the large basal ones deltate, inequilateral; secondary pinnae, pinnules, and segments strongly anadromous, all inequilateral at base; ultimate segments mostly 1-2 cm long, sessile or adnatedecurrent at base; costae and costules deeply and narrowly grooved adaxially; veins pinnately forked in ultimate segments, prominulous on both sides, especially so beneath; tissue dark green, firmly herbaceous. Sori distant; indusium oblong, cuneate at base, free only at the truncate apex.

    Distribution and Ecology - General Distribution. Greater and Lesser Antilles, Trinidad, and continental tropical America from Mexico to Pem, Bolivia, and Brazil. Distribution in Puerto Rico. Known from scattered montane localities, chieffy in the Siena de Luquillo and Cordillera Central; recorded from Barranquitas, Patillas, Rio Grande, Yabucoa, and Utuado. Habitat. Moist, deeply-shaded ravines and wooded slopes in wet forest areas at middle to high elevations (600-1000 m), uncommon.
