Species Description - Rhizome short-creeping, woody, 3-4.5 mm in to 3 m long; stipes much shorter than the blades, diam., densely clothed toward apex with lustrous light brownish or reddish-brown, freely armed reddish-brown, curved, hairlike scales up to 3.5 with many straight acicular spines 2-4 mm long and 0.3 mm broad at base. Fronds up Pinnae numerous adjacent pairs, rigidly divaricate, 20-45 cm long, mostly ovate-deltate, abruptly reduced at base, evenly narrowed from above the base to the acute apex, the costa flexuous; costae, secondary costae, and costules freely armed with sharp spreading acicular spines; secondary pinnae numerous, close, spreading, altemate or subopposite, very unequal, those just above the basal pair the largest, deltate-oblong to ovate-deltate, 5-15 cm long, 2-12 cm broad, the tertiary pinnae spreading or retrorse; ultimate pinnules inegularly rhombic, consisting of 2-4 cuneate-obdeltate segments, these cleft at the middle, each lobe emarginate and 2-soriate; tissue herbaceous, the veins usually evident.
Distribution and Ecology - General Distribution. Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. Distribution in Puerto Rico. Very widely distributed in suitable habitats; recorded from Aguas Buenas, Barranquitas, Bayamon, Caguas, Cayey, Fajardo, Manati, Maricao, Mayagñez, Naguabo, Patillas, Rio Grande, San German, San Juan, Utuado, and Villalba. Virgin Islands. St. Thomas, St. John, and Tortola. Habitat. Non-calcareous thickets, banks, and forest borders at low to rather high elevations (sea-level-950 m), common.
