Species Description - Rhizome short, erect, producing numerous slender, wiry roots, the apex clothed with stiff, blackish-brown hairs. Fronds fasciculate, erect, 4-13 cm long, sparingly pubescent on vascular parts, the hairs minute, clavate and 2-celled, together with a few longer, articulate, acicular ones; stipes 1-5 cm long. Blades oblong or lance-oblong, 3-8 cm long, 1.5-3 cm broad, pinnatifid, rounded-obtuse at apex, subtmncate or narrowed at base; rhachis broadly winged (wings up to 2 mm wide on either side); segments 5-10 pairs, close, oblong to broadly oblong, 4-8 mm broad, rounded at apex, the margins sinuate-lobulate; veins pinnately branched in the segments, the tips not reaching the margin; tissue dark yellowish-green, stiflf, translucent, glabrous. Sori one to several at apex of middle and distal segments; involucres immersed, 2-2.5 mm long, narrowly urceolate with abruptly flaring, undulate mouth; receptacle becoming long-exserted.
Distribution and Ecology - General Distribution. Florida; Greater and Lesser Antilles, and Mexico (Chiapas). Distribution in Puerto Rico. Known chiefly from the westem part of the island, with one collection from the Siena de Luquillo in the east; recorded from Maricao, Quebradillas, and Rio Grande. Habitat. Usually on mossy rotten logs or stumps, rarely on rocks, in moist forested areas at low to rather high elevations (200-900 m), rare.

Discussion
Lectotype. Kunze, Farmkrauter, t. 77, fig. 2 (as cited above), based on Bory, Trichom. no. 40, from Guadeloupe (designated by Proctor, Fl, Lesser Antilles 2: 93. 1977).
Syn. Ptilophyllum holopterum (Kunze) Prantl, Hymen. 47. 1875.
