    Genus Description - Characters as given for the family; plants perennial, with elongate stems; leaves spirally arranged in 4-24 ranks or more, rarely subverticillate or apparently opposite. Sporangia sessile or shortstalked; spores various, ranging from nearly smooth to foveolate, more or less ridged or reticulate, or rarely spinulose. Chromosome numbers: n = 23, 34, 35, 48, 70, 78, 104, 110, etc. up to 264; 2n numbers up to 528 have been recorded.

    Type Species. Lycopodium clavatum Linnaeus 1, widespread in north temperate regions and on tropical American mountains.

    A genus of more than 250 species, perhaps The Puerto Rican species represent three submany more, the majority on tropical mountains, genera as defined by Tryon & Tryon (1982).
