    Species Description - Low herbaceous, subscapose to caulescent, eglandular, usually puberulent to glabrate perennial 6-20 cm with clustered caudices from a woody taproot or vertical rhizomes. Leaves mostly sub-basal, leafstalk 4-10 cm, with petiole approximating or exceeding rachis; pinnae 2-5 pairs plus 1; leaflets crowded, usually imbricate, 4-8 pairs, obovate- to elliptic-oblong, 1.5-6 mm, 1.5-2.5 r, thick, without evident venation (or vein(s) slightly discernible on larger leaflets), puberulent or glabrate. Stipules ovate to deltoid, inconspicuous. Flowers 4-10 in short or exserted, sinuous, terminal, ultimately decumbent racemes. Pedicels 2-4 mm, not jointed; calyx lobes lanceolate, valvate, 3-5 mm, acute; petals pale- to orange-yellow, subequal, 5-6 mm, with short included claws; filaments shorter than petals, slightly pubescent; ovary villosulous. Legume indehiscent, ascending or incurved, often humistrate, oblong, slightly to usually strongly falcate (to 180°), rounded both at apex and base, 2-4 cm long, .5-.8 cm wide; valves papery, reticulate, reddish-brown, becoming impressed between few seeds.

    Cw Texas, Arizona, n to s Colorado and sw Kansas. Sandy deserts to dry, calcareous, rocky uplands, with mesquite, juniper, yucca, ephedra, occasionally ruderal, locally common. 2000-6000 ft. S: April-May; n: May-June, sporadically later. Mexico.
