Species Description - Straggly shrub from a heavy, woody caudex (1-)2-6(-10) dm. Twigs and leaves cinereous to glabrate; hairs flexuous, .3-.6 mm. Leaves alternate or paired from spurs; petioles 3-5 mm; leafstalk less than 1 cm; pinnae contiguous, (1-)2-4 pairs, to l(-2) cm; leaflets imbricate, 7-10 pairs, asymmetric-elliptic or elliptic-oblong, 3-6 mm long, .7-2 mm wide with evident venation or not. Stipules subulate, small, 2-3 mm. Heads 2.5-3.5 cm diam, pink, fading white, 4-10(-12) flowered, axillary; peduncles 1-2 cm, often with partially retrose pubescence. Perianth initially puberulent; corolla 3.5-4 mm, reddish, the lobes often involute; stamens 1.4-1.8(-2.5) cm. Legume oblanceolate, 2.5-6 cm; sutures strong; valves sparsely villous.

Distribution
S. California, nc Arizona to w New Mexico (var. chamaedrys to w Texas). Rocky desert slopes and plains, washes, canyons, cliffs; common. 400-4500 ft. Probably slightly in cultivation (Bailey & Bailey, 1941). (Jan.) March-May, Sept.-Nov. N. Mexico.
